When this dessert bakes, the entire house smells like a cozy winter day. The apples, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg make for the perfect soft base while the crumble bakes to a light crispy but decadent texture. While there are many recipes out there for a crumble, we tweaked the ingredients (and their ratios) to arrive at a topping that we liked best. And, although crumbles are usually paired with ice-cream, we ALWAYS have ours one with chilled vanilla custard.
Ingredients:
Filling
- Apples (skin peeled, cored, and chopped)- 2
- Cinnamon powder- 1/2 tsp
- Nutmeg powder- 1/4 tsp
- Caster sugar- 1/4 cup
- Lemon juice- 1 tbsp
Crumble
- Flour- 3/4 cup
- Rolled oats- 1/2 cup
- Caster sugar- 1/2 cup
- Cinnamon powder- 1/2 tsp
- Melted butter- 1/2 cup
Method:
- Preheat oven to 160°C.
- For the filling: in a medium bowl, add all the ingredients and mix well. Set aside
- For the crumble: add all the dry first and mix together until well combined. Pour in melted butter and fold everything until there is a sticky mixture.
- In an oven safe pan, layer apples evenly. Spoon crumble over the apples. Bake 40-45 minutes until crumble is slightly golden.
- Serve hot with ice-cream or custard.
